OVERVIEW
A Minimally Invasive Approach to Snoring
Snoring is more than an occasional nighttime disturbance. For some people, it can affect sleep quality, daily energy, and the sleep of those around them.
Laser Snoring Treatment uses controlled laser energy to treat selected soft tissues in the mouth and throat that may contribute to snoring.
At Worldwide, treatment begins with an assessment to determine whether laser therapy is appropriate and whether additional evaluation for sleep-related breathing disorders is necessary.
What Is Laser Snoring Treatment?
Laser snoring treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser energy to target selected soft tissues associated with airway vibration. Depending on the patient’s anatomy and treatment plan, the laser may be used to create controlled thermal effects in tissues such as the soft palate.
What Causes Snoring?
Snoring occurs when airflow through the upper airway becomes partially restricted during sleep. Potential contributing factors include:
- Relaxation of the soft palate
- Enlarged or elongated uvula
- Narrowed upper airway
- Tongue position & Nasal obstruction
- Excess body weight
- Alcohol or sedative use
- Age-related changes in soft tissues
Who May Be a Candidate?
Laser snoring treatment may be considered for adults who:
- Experience habitual snoring
- Have soft-palate-related tissue vibration
- Have appropriate oral and airway anatomy
- Prefer a minimally invasive approach
- Have been assessed for other potential causes of snoring
THE PROCEDURE
Laser Snoring Treatment Process
01
Consultation & Assessment
Your dentist evaluates your oral and upper-airway anatomy and discusses your snoring history. If symptoms suggest a sleep-related breathing disorder, further medical evaluation may be recommended.
02
Treatment Planning
If laser treatment is considered appropriate, the treatment area and laser protocol are planned according to your individual anatomy, aiming to target the tissues contributing to vibration while minimizing unnecessary tissue trauma.
03
Laser Treatment
The laser is applied to selected soft-tissue areas according to the treatment plan. The procedure is designed to create controlled thermal stimulation of the tissue. Multiple sessions may be recommended.
04
Recovery
Patients may experience temporary mild throat discomfort, swelling, dryness, sensitivity, or a sensation of tightness. Your dental team will provide specific post-treatment instructions.
05
Follow-Up
Follow-up appointments allow your dentist to evaluate healing and discuss changes in snoring. Additional treatment sessions may be recommended depending on the response.
Important Information
Understand the distinctions between snoring, sleep apnea, and the available treatment options before proceeding with therapy.
Laser Snoring Treatment: Minimally invasive approach, tissue removal is generally limited, anesthesia depends on procedure, generally shorter recovery.
Conventional Surgery: Surgical approach, may involve tissue removal, anesthesia usually required, can have longer recovery.
Neither approach is appropriate for every patient. The underlying cause of snoring should be identified before selecting treatment.
An oral appliance works differently from laser treatment.
Laser Treatment: Targets selected soft tissues that may contribute to vibration.
Oral Appliance: A custom oral appliance can reposition the lower jaw or tongue to help maintain airway space during sleep. For patients with certain types of sleep-related breathing disorders, an oral appliance may be more appropriate than laser therapy.
Occasional snoring is common. However, loud or persistent snoring can sometimes be associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition in which breathing repeatedly becomes restricted or stops during sleep.
Possible warning signs include: loud habitual snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping or choking during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, and morning headaches.
If these symptoms are present, a proper medical or sleep evaluation is important. Laser snoring treatment should not be presented as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
Laser snoring treatment should not automatically be considered a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. If OSA is suspected, the patient should undergo appropriate evaluation, which may include a sleep study or referral to a sleep specialist.
Before: Avoid alcohol, inform the team about medications, maintain normal oral hygiene, and complete additional evaluation if sleep apnea is suspected.
After: Stay adequately hydrated, avoid irritating foods temporarily, avoid smoking, and follow all post-treatment and medication instructions.
Benefits of Laser Snoring Treatment
Minimally Invasive
Laser treatment does not generally require conventional surgical removal of the targeted soft tissue. The procedure can provide a non-surgical approach for appropriately selected patients.
Short Sessions & Minimal Downtime
Individual treatment sessions are generally relatively brief. Many patients can return to normal daily activities relatively quickly, although recovery varies.
Personalized Care
Treatment can be planned according to the patient’s anatomy and the suspected source of snoring. Worldwide evaluates the underlying cause before recommending treatment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common Questions
The procedure is generally designed to minimize discomfort. Some patients may experience temporary throat discomfort or sensitivity afterward.
Individual treatment sessions are generally relatively short, but the exact duration depends on the treatment area and protocol.
No. Results vary between patients and may change over time.
There is no guarantee that snoring will completely disappear. The outcome depends heavily on the underlying cause.
Some patients require multiple sessions. Your dentist will recommend a treatment schedule based on your individual condition.
If sleep apnea is suspected, it should be properly evaluated first. Laser snoring treatment should not replace evidence-based diagnosis and treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.
It can. Soft tissues naturally change over time, and the original cause of snoring may persist or change.
START WITH THE RIGHT DIAGNOSIS

Snoring can have many different causes. Laser therapy may provide a minimally invasive option for selected patients, but the most important first step is understanding why you snore. At Worldwide, your condition is assessed before treatment so that the recommended approach matches your individual needs.
